Southern Comfort:
Review by David Hopkins ( bicyclebuyer.com )
We get regular emails from readers asking for help with buying THE
bike. This mythical creature has to be the be all and end all, the
durable, do it all road bike on which they can spend a modest
fortune, but can finally draw a line under their bike purchasing
for good. It must combine pedestrian-halting good looks and
dazzling performance with metronomic reliability and above all THE
bike must be nigh on indestructible. Well, we're sad to report that
THE bike doesn't exist. Sadly it's human nature to have our head
turned by this new thing and that, however good the bike is we have
sitting in the shed. And looks, performance and resilience are
often awkward shed fellows. But the nearest thing to THE bike is
probably made of titanium, and it's definitely made by Lynskey.
Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Lynskey Bikes are
arguably THE Titanium frame builders. Having produced bikes under
the Litespeed moniker, after that brand's eventual sale, the
Lynskey family decided to get back in the game and do what they do
best, designing and hand building Titanium bikes that offer the
bulk of what defines THE bike many of our readers so desire.
Performance, durability, stunning good looks and what equates to
the bike equivalent of immortality. Titanium is lighter than
aluminum or steel, incredibly stiff if worked properly, resilient,
rust proof and if you scratch it in its raw state it can be buffed
pretty much as good as new. And while it looks good when made to
use a watch bezel it's absolutely stunning when used to build a
bike's frame.
Realistically we could have chosen any one of the road frame
styles Lynskey lovingly craft from 3al-2.5v Ti (and please don't
get us started on the MTBs and the new single speed), but it's the
Sportive that we've earmarked as THE bike. Well it's actually THE
FRAME should we say, as the rest of the build will be up to
you.
Using their existing Cooper frame's sport-orientated geometry as
a starting point Lynskey has increased the head tube size and
lengthened the chain stays in order to offer a more upright and
realistic riding position for the mere mortal, and perfect for
lengthy hours in the saddle on a charity ride or Sportive event.
Increasing rider comfort is definitely the name of the game
here, and the radically bowed/curved seat stays, further this
aim.
Also allowing clearance for mudguards (fenders), even if you're
running 25c tires, the Lynskey Sportive would, along with being THE
bike for many people, also make an ideal Winter training bike for
made of money, faux-pro road riders.
Combining that aforementioned level of comfort with incredibly
responsive handling and a lightness of touch, as soon as we swung a
leg over our built up test version of the Sportive we were
inspired. Offering the rider formidable power transfer, this
Titanium frame is stiff in all the right places and urges, nay
demands that you keep upping your cadence and ratchet up the speed.
Slicing it's way across the road surface, the emphasis Lynskey has
place on ride comfort is tangible as the Sportive soaks up the
worst the road has to offer rather than passing it onto you.
Formidable as aluminum, but without the buzzy ride quality and
as quick and responsive as many carbon frames, Lynskey has produced
a bike that we defy you to ride and then not utter the simple
words, 'want one'. And that's just the ride quality, if we were to
get onto the timeless good looks of the Sportive we could be here
for quite a while. Just look at those clover-leaf drop-outs!
Prices for start at $1595.00 U.S. for
the frame in the standard Natural Matte Satin finish and increase
incrementally depending on the finish options you go. Not cheap we
know, but as the foundation of THE bike it's arguably money well
spent.
