The Challenge Criterium tyre is a modern reincarnation of the
once insurpassable Clement Criterium tubular tyre. It is made with
the same machines as the Clement, in the same traditional method
unlike modern tubulars where many steps are left out for cost
cutting and weight measures.
The outer tread is hand-glued onto the casing while it is under
pressure, ensuring that the tyre does not deform when the tyre is
pumped to in excess of 110psi for use. This results in a better
gripping tread.
Seamless latex tubes are incorporated into the tyre. Latex is
lighter and more supple than normal butyl tubes, meaning that they
ride more comfortably and bend/deform around irregular objects on
the roads that could otherwise cause a puncture. To further prevent
puncture, Challenge has incorporated the PPS (Puncture Protection
System), which consists of a belt of corespun polyester (300 tpi
polyester) installed between the casing and the tread, giving more
protection under the tread.
